70th Anniversary Celebration
The Manhattan Lions Club celebrated the 70th anniversary of their charter Sunday evening, August 17th, 2009 at the Manhattan Country Club. Emcee for the evening was State Council Chair Tom Badger, who is also a Manhattan Lion. The welcome was given by Manhattan President Lela Gillispie.
After a wonderful meal, CC Badger introduced guests PID Ed McCormick & State Secretary Lion Linda from Valley Center, DG Bryce Day & Lion Sally from District 17-N, DG Peggy Jacobson from District 17-0, DG Thelma Brown and VDG Bill Phillipi & Vickie from District 17- I. Also recognized were the following Past District Governors from Manhattan: Tom Roberts & Dixie, Jim Tubach & Lion Patsy & Tad Carlisle and Margaret. Other guests from across the district and the state included PDG Neal Nichols & Lion Beverly from Overland Park, PDG Daryl Stone and Lion Leah from Minneapolis, PDG Dale Rein from Council Grove, District Secretary Marilyn Sorenson & Lion Jerry from Scandia, PDG Verden Harms and Pauline. Lions members from Junction City, Hillsboro, Topeka and the Manhattan Sunflower club, as well as many Manhattan Lions members attended.
DG Brown congratulated the club on 70 years of activity in the community. PID McCormick was the featured speaker and challenged the group to grow and change and make a difference in the lives of those around us. International Presidental Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Lions Lowell Jack and Lion J. Lester Hooper for their many years of active participation in the Manhattan Club. An induction service was held by CC Badger & PID McCormick with new members C.E. and Dee McKee being sponsored by Lions Paul and Shirley Fleener. Presentations were made by President Gillispie to Lion Lerance Bolte for his years as Treasurer of the Manhattan Club and a Past President’s Pin to Immediate Past President Preston Chapel. The evening ended with benediction and singing of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” by the group.
